It zoomed BACKWARD?! Tiny seeds and ocean dreams, paint and puppies, tasty things! Wonder it! Draw it! Know it, whoo! Juno Blooms! And so can you! Zoom-zoom… WOW! It's a ROCKET! It's a SQUID! Hey! Splash-down! I'm going to see a real rocket! Mija! Today is Mermaid Race Day at the aquarium! And our squid, Splash, is the fastest swimmer here. A racing squid? We're coming! Lolo race too! My wonder question: How does a squid zoom? Splish, splash, race day! I packed fish crackers! For me. Welcome, ocean explorers! Wait! No tapping! Good catch. The aquarium has a few rules, to keep the animals happy. Then let's look closer! Rule one: quiet voices. Loud noises scare the animals. Tiny drum. Tiny voice. Rule two: look with your eyes. Never tap the glass. This is Inky, our octopus. She's a little shy. Hi, Inky. Sorry I almost tapped. She waved back! Hi, Inky! Octopuses have eight arms. Squid have eight arms, and two long tentacles. Eight… plus two… is ten! And here comes Splash! Bloom Book, come alive! How does it do that? See that tube? It's called a siphon. The squid fills its body with water… …then squeezes it out the siphon. Water goes one way, the squid zooms the other way! Like a water rocket! Yes! Scientists call it jet power. Squeeze… squirt! It went the whole tank! Octopuses use jet power too! Lolo jet! Pfffft! Squirt back. Zoom forward. That's beautiful AND brilliant! But how does Splash steer? Bloom Trip! Wheee! We're under the sea! A squid points its siphon to choose its way. Point it this way… and zoom! Point it that way… and zoom! Left! Right! Dizzy! For slow swimming, squid flap their fins. For fast, they use jet power! The siphon is a steering wheel! Octopuses crawl with their arms, and jet when they need to hurry. Push back… go forward! Wheee! Squirt back, zoom forward… that's a SONG! Zoom-zoom… WOW! Squirt back! Zoom forward! Water out the siphon, off we go! Point it left, point it right, Squirt back, zoom forward, whoa-oh-oh! Fill up with water, squeeze it out, That's what jet power is all about! That's it! Push one way? Go the other! Need to hide? Ink cloud cover! Make-It Moment! Let's build a balloon boat! A tray for the boat. A straw out the back. A balloon on the straw. Straw goes out the back. Check! Extra tape. Extra safe. Pinch it shut… ready! Which way will the boat go? Ready… let go! They're going! Every push has a push back. Air pushes back, the boat goes forward. Just like Splash! Our straw is a siphon! My boat went three hands far! Bigger balloon, bigger zoom! Mine needs less tape. Squirt back, zoom forward! Lolo boat? Please? You can race it in the big race, Lolo! But first, one more squid trick! Squid and octopuses have one more trick, to stay safe. What trick? When a hungry fish comes close, they squirt a cloud of dark ink! The fish is confused, and the squid gets away. A magic disappearing trick! Can you wiggle your fingers like an ink cloud? Ink cloud! Where did Benji go? Our squid and octopus are safe here, so they almost never need ink. Hi again, Inky! Lolo ink! …No ink. Squirt to zoom. Point to steer. Ink to hide! Mermaid Race Day is starting! Practice run! Ready… go! Lolo boat… dizzy! Maybe it needs a bigger balloon! The BIGGEST balloon! Wait. A bigger push won't fix a spin. Look closer. Wonder it… draw it… figure it out! Look at the straw! The straw is bent sideways! Like Splash's siphon! It points the way you go. A sideways push makes a spin. A straight push makes a straight zoom. So we point it straight back! Straight as a ruler. Just ONE piece of tape. Lolo boat… ready! STRAIGHT! Lolo zoom! We didn't need a bigger balloon. We needed to point it straight! That's how squid steer, and how sailors aim their boats. Point the push! Okay. Maybe a normal balloon. Everybody, check your straws! Even Splash wants to watch! Mermaid Race Day! Racers, ready? Count with us! Three… Two… One… GO! Squirt back, zoom forward! Go, go, GO! Lolo… WON?! Fastest little boat! Because the push went straight back. And everyone's boat zoomed forward! A medal for every ocean explorer! Thank you, Nana Lu! I bet Ozzie's rocket works the same way! Bye, Splash! Ooh, fact flash! Giant squid have eyes as big as dinner plates! My eye is THIS big. That's beautiful AND brilliant! Petal Recap! Help our flower bloom! Squid squirt water back, and zoom… FORWARD! To steer, a squid points its… SIPHON! Every push has a… PUSH BACK! To hide, squid squirt… INK! Point it… STRAIGHT! How does a squid zoom? Squirt back, zoom forward! And always: gentle hands, curious eyes. Lolo… jet power! Ozzie! Our squid squirted water back and zoomed forward! Our rocket pushed gas down and zoomed UP! Push one way… …go the other way! Come count down with me! Rockets are squids?! Come see! Watch 3-2-1 Rocket Blast next, on Ozzie Zooms! Wonder it, draw it… Zoom in, zoom out… …see you next time!
